2016–2017 Season finale: SUMMER FESTIVALS

Before heading to a summer festival, join us to look back and enjoy three performances in South Korea, Switzerland and the U.S. Let's watch cellist Jian Wang and pianist Tae-Hyung Kim perform Chopin's cello sonata at 2014 Great Mountains Music Festival in PyeongChang; the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra join trumpeter Markus Stockhausen for his "MINIATURE of a Soul's Journey" at the Lucerne Festival in the summer of 2011; and cellist Katinka Kleijn with Karina Canellakis conducting the International Contemporary Ensemble give the world premiere of Dai Fujikura's cello concerto at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, NY last summer.

Father's Day tribute

Following our Mother's Day celebration last month, it's time for a Father's Day tribute! Let's watch Mischa Maisky with his son Sascha and daughter Lily perform Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Boian Videnoff conducting the Mannheimer Philharmoniker; Giovanni Sollima play his father Eliodoro Sollima's "Sonata 1948" with pianist Giuseppe Andaloro; and Julian Schwarz perform Elgar's Cello Concerto with his father Gerard Schwarz conducting the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Mother's Day celebration

Mother's Day is fast approaching so join us for the celebration! Let's watch Ophélie Gaillard (nominee of our 5th Listeners' Choice Award) perform Manuel de Falla's "Nana" accompanied by Emmanuel Rossfelder and David Chupete; Oren Shevlin and Nicholas Rimmer play Ralph Vaughan Williams' "She Borrowed Some of Her Mother's Gold" from his Six Studies in English Folk Song for cello and piano; and the Kronos Quartet perform "Oh Mother, The Handsome Man Tortures Me" live at Barbican Hall's Ramadan Nights Festival 2008.

Passover and Easter

Following our previous feature on Passover and Easter, join us for three contrasting works in celebration of the upcoming holidays. Let's watch cellist Wassily Gerassimez and pianist Nicolai Gerassimez play Martinů's "Rossini Variations" based on a theme from "Moses in Egypt"; the Apollo Chamber Players perform Gilad Cohen's "Three Goat Blues" which uses a Provençal tune of the Jewish Passover prayer "Chad Gadya"; and Tan Dun conduct his multimedia oratorio "Water Passion" featuring violinist Cho-Liang Lin and cellist Felix Fan with coloratura soprano Ying Huang and bass-baritone Stephen Bryant.

Saint Patrick's Day

Join us for a St. Patrick's Day celebration and watch a special arrangement of "Danny Boy" for cello and voice performed by cellist and singer Simon Wallfisch, Frank Martin's "Trio on Popular Irish Folk Tunes" (2nd and 3rd movements) played by cellist Isabel Gehweiler with violinist Arata Yumi and pianist Yulia Miloslavskaya, and Krzysztof Lenczowski's "Irish Pub" performed by the cellist-composer's Atom String Quartet.

For the Valentines

Following our Valentine's Day feature last year, join us for two romances and a love song written for cello. Let's watch Peter Schmidt with pianist Katia Michel perform Pablo Casals' "Romanza", Suzana Stefanovic play Jesús Rueda's "Love Song No. 3", and Li-Wei Qin perform Luis Serrano Alarcón's "Tramonto: Romanza for Cello and Wind Ensemble" with the composer conducting the Philharmonic Winds of Singapore.

Centenary Celebrations

Welcome 2017 and Happy New Year! We're celebrating the 100th anniversary of three cello works written by Fauré, Villa-Lobos and Frank Bridge. Let's watch Fauré's Cello Sonata No.1 (2nd movement) performed by Timotheos Petrin with pianist George X. Fu, Villa-Lobos' "Song of the Black Swan" played by Greta Parks, and Frank Bridge's Cello Sonata performed by Edward Luengo with pianist Kevin Lee Sun. We're looking forward to another 100 years of wonderful music!

Holiday Concerts

Happy holidays to you and your family! To celebrate this joyous season, join us for three festive concerts! Let's watch violinist Rachell Wong and cellist Nicholas Mariscal play "Gloomy Winter's Now Awa'" and "Giga Do Tenerife" at the 2015 Heifetz Holiday Concert; the Trio Arte perform Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1 (1st movement) at Istanbul German Consulate Christmas Concert 2013; and cellist Christoph Croisé play Saint-Saëns' "The Swan" with Kevin Griffiths conducting the Collegium Musicum Basel at the 2016 New Year's Concert.

Universal Children's Day

Following our Universal Children's Day celebrations in 2014 and 2015, this time let's watch 13-year-old cellist Krzysztof Michalski perform Paganini's "Variations on a theme from Moses" with pianist Ireneusz Boczek at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of the Polish National Radio; BBC Young Musician 2016 Sheku Kanneh-Mason play Bach's Sarabande from Cello Suite No. 2; and the 2016 YoungArts Winners in Music—Katherine Woo, Zlatomir Fung and Adria Ye—perform Pierre Jalbert's Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano (1st movement).

Hallowe'en

To stir up a festive spirit for Hallowe'en, let's watch "La ville: Cancan macabre" (from Thomas Adès' "Lieux retrouvés") performed by cellist Michael Kaufman and pianist Brendan White, Beethoven's famous "Ghost" Trio (2nd movement) played by violinist Eva Bindere with cellist Kristīna Blaumane and pianist Reinis Zariņš, and John Zorn's "All Hallows Eve (i. Matins)" performed by violinist Orin Laursen with violist Alexandra Simpson and cellist Marza Merophi Wilks.

The MOON

Whether you're looking forward to the Moon Festival (Sep 15) or the Harvest Moon (Sep 16), join us to celebrate the brightest and longest moonlight of the year with vibrant, romantic, and festive moon-inspired music. Let's watch cellists Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber play William Lloyd Webber's "Moon Silver" with pianist Pam Chowhan; violist Lawrence Dutton and cellist Paul Watkins of the Emerson Quartet join forces with the Modigliani Quartet to perform Schoenberg's string sextet "Verklärte Nacht" (Transfigured Night); and cellist Maja Bogdanović with narrator Dragoljub Mićko Ljubičić interpret Aleksandar Sedlar's "Mesečeva kći" (Moon's daughter) with Simfonijski orkestar RTS conducted by the composer.
